Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

Apparenance: Adult brown marmorated stink bugs are approximately.67 inches long and about as wide, forming the characteristic heraldic shield shape. They are generally a dark brown when viewed from above, with a creamy white-brown underside. Individual coloration may vary, with some bugs being various shades of red, grey, light brown, copper, or black.

The stink bug is native to Asia and was accidentally released into the U.S. around 1998. Virginia, along with Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, is the current hot zone for these pests. North Carolina and other surrounding states are also severely affected.

Stink bugs are primarily an agricultural pest and feed on a wide range of crops including apples, apricots, Asian pears, cherries, corn, grapes, lima beans, peaches, peppers, tomatoes, and soybeans.

Stink bugs are a nuisance pest for most homeowners. They generally enter a home under siding, through soffits, around window and door frames, chimneys, or any space which has openings big enough for their size. They seek warmth and generally wait indoors for winter to pass. They do hibernate, but may wake up and fly about a warm home.

Prevention includes sealing gaps in obvious entry spots. They tend to be immune to most over the counter pest control sprays. A Four Seasons technician can help develop a plan to mitigate them inside your home.
