Wolf Spiders

What do wolf spiders look like?

Wolf spiders are big, hairy, and fast. They range from gray to brown with dark markings that help them blend into their surroundings. Unlike web-building spiders, their bodies are more robust, and their long legs make them strong, agile hunters. If you look closely, you’ll notice their eyes—eight arranged in three neat rows, giving them excellent vision.

What do wolf spiders eat?

These spiders aren’t picky. They hunt down insects, other spiders, and just about anything small enough to catch.

Do wolf spiders bite?

Yes, but not often. A wolf spider would rather run than fight, but if you grab or corner one, it might defend itself with a bite. The good news? Their venom isn’t medically significant for most people—just slight swelling and redness.

Are wolf spiders dangerous?

Not really. They look intimidating, but wolf spiders don’t pose a serious threat to most humans. Their venom isn’t potent enough to cause significant harm, and they’d rather avoid people altogether.

Do wolf spiders build webs?

No, wolf spiders do not build webs. Unlike other spiders that spin webs to catch food, wolf spiders prefer to hunt down their prey. They rely on speed, stealth, and sharp eyesight to chase down insects, so you might see them darting across the floor rather than hanging out in a web.

What attracts wolf spiders to my home?

Wolf spiders come in looking for food. If your home has a lot of insects, it’s like an all-you-can-eat buffet for them. They also sneak inside when the weather turns cold or if their usual outdoor hiding spots get disturbed.

How do wolf spiders enter homes?

They squeeze through cracks and gaps around doors and windows, vents, and even under garage doors. If there’s an opening, they’ll find it—especially if they sense food inside.

Where should I look for wolf spiders?

Check dark, quiet spaces where they can hide and hunt. Basements, garages, crawl spaces, and closets are all fair game. Outside, they like to shelter under rocks, logs, and thick landscaping. If you shine a flashlight toward the ground at night, you might even catch their eyes reflecting light.
