Why Pest Entry Points Matter in the Fall
Pests do not need a front door left wide open to get inside.
Insects can take advantage of cracks, gaps around windows and doors, openings near siding and trim, and spaces around utility penetrations. Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings around foundations, garages, pipes, vents, and other parts of a structure.
As temperatures begin to cool later in the season, some pests become more likely to seek protected places around or inside homes. Others may already be living close to the structure and simply find an available way indoors.
That makes September a good time to pay closer attention to your home's exterior and any openings pests may use.
Where Should You Check for Pest Entry Points?
You do not have to examine every inch of your house with a flashlight. Start with the places where different materials meet or where something passes through the exterior.
Common areas worth checking include:
- Gaps beneath exterior doors
- Worn or damaged weatherstripping
- Garage door edges that do not seal tightly
- Torn window or door screens
- Openings around plumbing, electrical lines, cable, or HVAC components
- Cracks or gaps around the foundation
- Crawl space doors and access points
- Damaged vent covers or screens
- Gaps around exterior trim, soffits, or other structural transitions
Seeing a gap does not necessarily mean pests are using it. But openings around these areas can provide access, especially when they connect directly to wall voids, crawl spaces, garages, or other protected parts of the home.
Older Homes May Have More Places to Check
An older home is not automatically more likely to have a pest infestation.
It can, however, have more places that deserve a closer look.

Over the years, weatherstripping wears down. Caulk can separate. Wood and other exterior materials can deteriorate. Homes settle. New plumbing, cable, electrical, HVAC, and other utilities may be added. Renovations and repairs can also create new transitions between old and new materials.
As a home ages, worn materials, repairs, renovations, and added utility penetrations can create more areas that deserve a closer look.
That does not mean every crack needs to become a major home-improvement project. It does mean that checking doors, utility penetrations, crawl space access points, and other obvious openings can be worthwhile.
Can You Seal Every Pest Entry Point?
In most homes, it is difficult to do.
Homeowners can do a lot to reduce pest access. Replacing damaged screens, fixing worn door sweeps, and addressing obvious gaps can all help.
But eliminating every possible opening is another matter.
Some insects can enter through openings that are extremely difficult to notice. Homes also have vents, utility connections, doors, windows, and other necessary openings that cannot simply be sealed shut. Some need to remain functional and may require screens, covers, seals, or other appropriate exclusion methods instead.
Rodent exclusion can be challenging for the same reason. A small gap around a pipe, foundation, garage door, soffit, or utility line may be enough to provide access, and not every opening is easy to see from ground level.
The goal is not to make your home airtight. It is to reduce obvious opportunities while recognizing that exclusion is only one part of keeping pests under control.
Pest Prevention Goes Beyond Filling Gaps
Sealing an opening can help prevent pests from using that particular route, but it does not address everything happening around a property.
Ants may be active around the foundation. Spiders may be establishing webs near exterior lights. Stinging insects may have a nest around an eave or another protected location. Mice may be active around garages, sheds, crawl spaces, or other areas close to the home.
Moisture, food, shelter, vegetation, and pest activity around the exterior can all influence whether pests become a problem.
That is why effective pest prevention is broader than a tube of caulk and a new door sweep.
